What is Thermal Balloon Ablation?

Thermal Balloon Ablation is a medical procedure that has the same outcome as endometrial ablation, i.e. ends menorrhagia or heavy monthly periods, but is safer and does not require surgery or stitches.

During a woman's menstrual cycle, the lining inside uterus is expelled, however, some of the cells of the endometrium grow outside of the uterus, which is then diagnosed as endometriosis.  When a woman has heavy menstrual periods, i.e. excessive menstrual bleeding that becomes debilitating, thermal balloon ablation may be prescribed by a doctor to resolve the problem. Unlike endometrial ablation, thermal balloon ablation destroy the uterine lining without surgery,  incision, stitches or extended recovery time.

To perform
Thermal Balloon Ablation, a doctor places the balloon in through the vagina and past the cervix, into the uterus and the balloon is then filled with a heated fluid to 87 degrees (Celsius) for 8 minutes. After 8 minutes, the lining (endometrium) of the uterus has been destroyed, and the doctor withdraws the balloon.  The procedure rarely takes more than 30 minutes and women typically resume their daily routines the next day.

Pregnancy is not possible once the lining of the uterus has been destroyed.
